SHEFFIELD RETURN

SPROTBROUGH TO SHEFFIELDThis route follows the canal on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation. Through Sprotbrough, past Conisbrough Castle and the viaduct. This is a picturesque section of the canal, surrounded by trees and wildlife. Other highlights are the industrial sections of the route that give you a real feel for the canals past, the Tinsley flight of locks, the Attercliffe section and the approach to the Sheffield Basin.

This route offers our guests a glimpse of the past as well as the present. South Yorkshire was a busy industrial canal and remains one of the last commercial inland waterways. If you are lucky you may even see some of the large working barges or oil tankers in operation.

Duration
Designed for a 3 night weekend hire, dependant on the speed and sailing hours.

Highlights

  1. Sprotbrough to Conisbrough section
  2. Tinsley Flight of Locks
  3. Attercliffe section
  4. Wide River sections

Recommendation
There are a few pubs to choose from on the early section of this route. The Boat Inn is always a favourite at the beginning or end of a trip. However ,The Pastures Lodge at Mexbrough has a mooring right on it's doorstep. There is a pub and a separate restaurant called Reeds, if you want something more gourmet. This is located about 2 hours sail from Sprotbrough.

SELBY RETURN

SPROTBROUGH TO SELBY

A picturesque and versatile journey. This route shows you every side to the canal. Starting on the Sheffield & South Yorkshire navigation, onto the New Junction canal and the Aire & Calder navigation before returning. The journey takes you through locks, lift bridges, swing bridges and Aqueducts. With nice wide sections and narrow quaint runs. You will pass industrial boat yards and long stretches of countryside. This route does not disappoint even the experienced narrowboater.

Duration
Designed for a 4 night mid-week hire, dependant on the speed and sailing hours. However, there is no real need to go all the way to Selby, as the town itself doesn't offer anything extraordinary. You could, just as easily, turn around at an earlier wide spot and be able to return on a weekend trip.

Highlights

  1. Syke House section of locks and bridges
  2. Aquaduct
  3. Pollington Lock and moorings
  4. Whitley Lock and moorings

Recommendation
If you have time, take a detour to Stainforth and stop at The New Inn. Positioned right on the canal, it's a real treat to stop here for a drink and a bite to eat.

LEEDS/SKIPTON RETURN

SPROTBROUGH TO LEEDS

Once you are on the Aire and Calder Navigation, instead of sailing to Selby you can choose to go onto to the Leeds & Liverpool canal. This is a much longer trip due to its popularity and the amount of locks. If you get your timings right you can moor up in the center of Leeds on a night and stroll into the city for a meal and some cocktails. Then head on to the Bingley Five Rise, an amazing row off five locks. This takes some time to get through and if you find yourself in a queue, there is the highly recommend 5 Rise Cafe that does great bacon butties. From here onwards there is a lovely trip onto Skipton, with lots of small villages and moorings on the way.

Please see the Sprotbrough to Selby section to read more about the early section of this route.

Duration
Designed for a 7 night week hire, dependant on the speed and sailing hours. There is so much to see and get distracted by on this route, it is easy to let time run away with you.

Highlights

  1. The same highlights as the Selby return.
  2. Mooring in Leeds city center.
  3. Bingley Five Rise & 5 Rise Cafe
  4. The Fisherman's Inn, Dowley Gap

Recommendation
A stop over in leeds city center comes highly recommended by our previous guests. You couldn't get a better spot in the hub of leeds.
